The most energy-poor diets are called Vled (fork for eng. Very low energy diet) and contains approx. 800 kcal per day dose, given as powder stirred into water. The powder should replace all food. Vitamins and minerals are either employed in powder, or taken as well. Vled is suitable for patients who need a large weight loss in a relatively short time. In controlled studies provide Vled a weight loss of about 2.5 kg in the first week and 1-2 kg per week thereafter. 90% of overweight people want to achieve a weight loss of at least 10 kg within 8.10 weeks.
However, studies show that most do not maintain this weight loss over tid.VLED should not be used by children and young people growing, pregnant women, nursing mothers and patients with unstable disease. Vled should only be considered for use in people who have serious degree of overweight (ie BMI> 30 kg/m2), who have undergone medical evaluation, and who have a disease where a significant weight reduction is an important part of treatment. Vled has a number of side effects such as fatigue, headaches, hair loss, gallstones, gout, and psychiatric disorders.
Vled can also be considered for use in cases where significant weight reduction is needed preoperatively, and how this should happen relatively quickly.
Diets with moderately to severely reduced energy content
Moderate energy reduced diet will give a weight loss of 0,2-0,5 kg per week, and a 10% weight loss at 6 months. The highly energy-reduced diet will give a weight loss of 0,5-0,9 kg per week in the first 6 months. This is achieved by reducing the total energy intake by 300-500 kcal (1,3-2,1 MJ) at moderate energy reduced diet or by 500-1000 kcal (2,1-4,2 MJ) by strongly reduced energy cost. The minimum intake recommended not under 1200 kcal or 5.0 MJ.
